Summer Hairstyles Series: Braids

Our hair experiences major damage during the hot summer months and the NYC humidity makes it hard to style our hair how we want.  This is where our love of braids comes into play. Braids are a great option to keep your mane looking polished and neat regardless of the weather. Also, they’re a great way to create beachy waves without the damage of hot tools. Small, large, French, fishtail, we love em’ all!

IMG_20140622_092032We love using a texturizing spray to start. Give a good spritz to your hair focusing on the ends. Create a small French braid on the crown of your head, securing with a pin (for this part, we love fun, bold, statement hair pins like L. Erickson Crystal Vine on Tige Boule). With the remaining hair put together a simple, classic braid- we like to add the L. Erickson  Atelier Enamel Cuff Pony  to add a fun element. If you want the look to be extra polished, lightly hair spray your new look while combing back any loose strands. Personally, we like a slightly messy look. We tend to loosen up the braid a bit and pull out small strands by our ears.  This look is a double-whammy because it’s a great second day look as well! Once you take out the braids, you will have great beachy waves that will look awesome the next day (and cut your getting ready time in half!)

IMG_20140622_092919Our next favorite look, is for those of you who don’t mind keeping your hair down during summer or prefer a more feminine look. Start off with a middle part (a side part can work too), than begin doing a medium, sized French braid on both sides of your head. While creating this look pull the braid upwards, so it’s not directly on the crown of your head. Once both braids are complete, pin it underneath the rest of your hair, hiding the pins. Depending on our mood (and weather) we like creating loose, beachy waves with the rest of our hair.

We love effortlessly, gorgeous hair as much as the next girl but especially for the summer! It’s the perfect time of year to be creative with your hair! Be daring and don’t be scared to dress up your locks with fun accessories! Product Rave: pur~lisse pur~protect SPF 30 Essential Daily Moisturizer

First off we want to apologize for not posting in the last two weeks- if you follow us on Instagram and Twitter then you know we were away on vacation.  I wanted to write a post on a newly discovered favorite product– pur~lisse’s pur~protect Essential Daily Moisturizer.

photo (1)You all know how important it is to incorporate a moisturizer with SPF into your daily skincare routine– so it was a no brainer when we received this product from pur~lisse.  I wanted to really test out the effectiveness of this product so I decided to bring it along with me on my beach vacation.

This lotion has a really smooth texture and feels really nice when applied to your face.  While it does contain SPF 30- it does not have that traditional sunscreen smell.  It did not leave behind an oily or sticky residue on my face, and really left my skin feeling hydrated- but most of all protected.

I used this product everyday when I was away- I applied a generous amount all over my face and neck.  Between the sweat, and the seawater I reapplied the moisturizer once more during the afternoon.  I used this product everyday for about 8 days and I am happy to report I did NOT get sunburnt at all.

I really love this moisturizer and I have been using it daily.  However I would not recommend using this product if you are planning to take any pictures because the SPF will leave your face with a white cast.

All in all I highly recommend this product! Remember it’s summertime and the UVA/UVB rays are harmful on all skin types and skin coloring- so try a moisturizer with SPF for full skin protection!  We would love to know some of your summertime skincare favorites- Share with us on twitter at @passtherouge and on Instagram at passtherouge.

My 5 Beauty Must Haves

I was recently ask by a friend what are my five favorite beauty products—to be honest, I actually never thought about it.  I have so many favorites and I am loyal to many brands. I decided this would be a great post that I could share with you all.  After much deliberation, I have picked my favorites.  So here we go:photo (1)

Kari Gran Lip Whip: I must own over 60 different types of lip products- however a constant favorite of mine has been Kari Gran’s Lip Whip.  I love how this balm really nourishes my lips and doesn’t leave behind a waxy feeling that other balms do. Also the scents that they come in are so delicious- I have the cinnamon and peppermint flavors.  Check out our full review here.

Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre:  I first learned about this brand from Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle site, goop.  I purchased this lotion about three years ago on a trip to Paris, and now 5 tubes later- I am still in love! This is a multi-use product- it can be a traditional lotion, makeup primer, and even, makeup remover—I know, it’s that amazing.   I’m so happy they are now selling it here in the US. Check out our full review here.

Bioderma Crealine C2O: Unfortunately this brand is not sold here in the U.S. so I buy this makeup remover in bulk when I head over to Europe- which I don’t do that often. This remover feels like water- it’s that gentle. I love that it doesn’t leave behind that oily residue that other removers do.  It really just an amazing product and I have yet to find something comparable here in the US.

Pür Minerals Dirty Girl Mudd Masque: I’m sure you all are sick of hearing me speak about my love for Pür Minerals.  Valerie and I have been lucky enough to try a whole range of their products and we happen to love them all- their standout product for me is their mud mask. I have tried countless masks and I love this one because it really gets in there and gets rid of all the gunk in your pores.  Check out our full review here.

It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Anti-Aging Concealor: I really struggle with dark, puffy under eyes.  These bags appeared junior year of college and have never left me.  I’ve tried so many under eye concealors- hoping each time that this will be my magic product…then I purchased IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye.. and I never looked back.  This yellow based concealor is on the thicker side so I mix a very small amount with some eye cream and then apply it.  It does a great job of covering up my bags and blends really nicely into my skin. I recommend this product to everyone I know!

So there you go- my favorite five beauty products! As you can see, I have more skincare favorites than actual makeup favorites- I really believe if you put the time in to taking care of your skin, there is little to no need to wear makeup.  Natural beauty is the best kind of beauty.  With that, I wish you all wonderful day!

My In-Flight Beauty Routine

photo 2 (8)Personally I’m not the biggest fan of flying- I get super groggy, my feet and hands swell, and my skin feels extra dry. Recently, I started looking at flying as a positive experience to relax, catch up on some reading, and (of course) do some skincare treatments.  I mainly do these treatments when I’m on a flight  that is over 4 hours and I use products that wont’ scare away the other passengers (Hmm, so maybe no in-flight clay mask..)

As soon as I sit down I whip out my favorite facial wipes, Cetaphil Cleansing Wipes, to remove all my makeup. Next I apply Pomega 5 Daily Revitalizing Concentrate to my face, then Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentre on my neck and face, and lastly Sibu Age Defying Eye Cream around my eyes.

Don’t forget those lips! I apply a thick lip balm like Nuxe Reve de Miel  every 45 minutes (excessive? maybe.) Depending on how my skin is feeling I’ll spritz my beloved Caudalie Beauty Elixir onto my face and chest. The aroma gives a spa-like feel along with added hydration to your skin. As everything is absorbing into my skin I apply Phyto Secret De Nuit leave-in hair treatment and put my hair up in a braid.

photo 1 (11)DRINK! DRINK! DRINK!…water that is, but who’s judging if you want a glass of wine or two….or three. When the lights start to dim I wipe off all of the products using my trusty facial wipes. Again, I apply serum onto my face and now use a water-based sleeping mask like Laneige Firming Sleeping Pack. I spray my face with some more rosewater, and then slather on my favorite hand cream, Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment. Now here is my favorite part– put on your fussiest, comfiest socks and catch up on those (much needed) Zzz’s.

Voila! Once your flights lands you’ll be able to put your best face forward!

Pass the Rouge x France Luxe

We are thrilled to officially announce our partnership with France Luxe! For those of you who may not know, France Luxe is a luxury hair accessories retailer.  We will be collaborating with them on a series all about hair trends, which will be featured here on Pass the Rouge, and on their blog- The Luxe Look.  We are so excited to kick off this series with a Q&A with Jen from The Luxe Look. Don’t forget to check out our Q&A on their blog here.  So let’s jump into it!

Pass the Rouge:  Welcome to Pass the Rouge! We would love to know a more about you–Tell us a little bit about yourself:

FranceLuxeLGJ: I’m Jen from The Luxe Look at We are a luxury hair accessories retailer where you can find everything from your favorite bobby pins and ponytail holders to crystal barrettes & headbands. Basically, if you need a hair accessory, is your new favorite online shop.

I handle all of our social media marketing as well as write for The Luxe Look. I’m a 20-something marketing professional born and raised in the Pacific Northwest with a passion for being happy and finding something that you love to do each day.

PTR: Tell us all about your hair:

J: I have a strawberry-blonde-ish color that is rather hard to describe. It’s all natural, and extremely thick. I’m currently in the process of growing it out so I can style it in more fun ways. It’s pretty coarse and requires lots of attention (aka: hair dryer, lots of products and a flat iron). It’s an inch or two past my shoulders right now and I want to add two or three more inches. I’ve had a bob for the last few years, so this is a fun new style for me!

PTR: Summer is right around the corner.  What is your go-to summer hairstyle?

J: For summer, I have a few go-to looks. And as my hair keeps getting longer I’m adding more and more. I sport a ponytail often, but I like to mix it up by adding braids, twists, curls, volume, and more. This is such a fun style because the base is easy to create, then I have freedom to do what I want with it. I’m not sure about you, but during the summer some days my hair is dry, other days it’s frizzy, and some days it just lays flat. I usually roll with the punches and work with what texture I’ve got for the day.

PTR: We would love to know what do you usually do with 2nd day hair?

J: Second day hair is pretty much my least favorite hair. If I’m honest, I usually wash it every single day (shame on me!!!). However, when I don’t, Dry Shampoo and a top knot are my best friends. I am also starting to love doing braids on 2nd day hair now that my hair is long enough!

PTR: Being part of The Luxe Look, we are sure you own tons of hair accessories. What hair accessory could you not live without?

J: It’s a tie between ponies and bobby pins. I’ll never be caught without at least a few of each of them. I keep a stash in all of my bags, in my car, at my desk, by my bed…you get the picture. You never know when you’ll need to pull your hair up and I love having them handy.

Jen Burke (1)PTR: What is a hairstyle you wish you could do in your own hair but cannot?

J: The Crown Braid! It’s seriously amazing and I’m dying to do it on my hair, I just need a bit more length to pull it off.

PTR: Summer means festivals! What’s your favorite festival hair style this year?

J: Braids, braids, braids. Everything braided with flowers and turbans makes me happy.

PTR: Being from Seattle, we are sure you have had your share of rainy days. Does weather ever affect your hair?

J: Yes – most mornings I even check the weather prior to deciding on how to style my hair. If it’s going to rain, I tend to try styles that are up and can’t be ruined by getting wet. When it comes to sun and heat, I have a different mentality. I know I have to add extra product to my hair to protect it from the sun and keep it from being frizzy from humidity.

PTR: Do you plan on changing your hair this year?

J: Well, I’m currently growing it out and trying to add length, however once I have a few more inches I want to add a bunch of fun layers to my look! But as for color, I’m sticking to what I’ve got for now.

PTR: There are some hair trends that should never return. What hair trend(s) do you hope will NOT make a comeback?

J: The Mullet. Need I say more? Oh. And also curly perms. I hope they (and the pictures of me with one) stay tucked away forever.  J

PTR: What celebrities give you “hair envy”?

J: Jennifer Lawrence! I dream of what it would be like to rock a pixie like her! And I love her look now that she is growing it out. Such a cute style.

PTR: What is you go-to hair accessory or style you resort to when you’re stuck in a hair rut?

J: My go-to style is probably a ponytail of some sort. I like to mix it up…side pony, high pony, low pony, pony cuff, etc. And the pony cuff is my savior here. Have you tried one? Seriously amazing. It takes zero time and dresses up my ponytail instantly. Not a sales pitch, it’s really my favorite item!

PTR: Where do you turn to get some “hair inspiration”?

J: My number one inspiration is Pinterest these days for hair ideas. I also have a few go-to sites to check out for hair tutorials: The Freckled Fox, The Small Things Blog, Refinery29.

Don’t forget to check out our Q&A on The Luxe Look, and if you have any questions for Jen—comment below or tweet her at @FranceLuxeHair.

Stay tuned for more!

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and if your household is anything like ours- then Mother’s Day is a BIG deal! Rightfully so, being a mother is hard work! For those of you out there who aren’t the best at gift giving, we have compiled a list of a few suggestions.  So let’s jump into it!

photo (36)

(from left to right) Gourmet tea and mug, Diptyque candles and fragrances, tenoverten nail polishes in Washington and Spring

tenoverten nail polishes- We are big fans of tenoverten so anytime we can share our love for them- we will! These polishes are great because they are free of harmful ingredients like formaldehyde and resin, they go on smoothly and have a long-lasting finish. We are loving tenoverten’s polishes in Spring and Washington–they are perfect for the warmer months! Check out our review of tenoverten’s Washington polish here.

Diptyque candles and fragrances – We both love candles and room sprays, it’s the easiest way to set a mood in a home.  Diptyque candles and fragrances are some of our favorites because they have such a wide range of scents from floral, to fruity, to earthy– and everything in between.  We recommend trying their candles in the scents Cypres, and Genevrie, and their fragrances in Baies, and Rose.

Gourmet Tea and Personalized Mug- To some of you, tea may seem like a silly idea- but we think a beautiful assortment of tea is the perfect gift.  Again, if your mom likes a particular brand- go with that! We happen to love Mariage Frères gift sets, and you can buy them at any gourmet food store like Dean & DeLuca. Pair a nice tea set with a beautiful mug from Anthropologie or C. Wonder and you’re set! If your mom is not a tea drinker- buy her favorite coffee instead!

Remember Mother’s Day is time to be around family.  If you can’t afford a gift- a nice card and a big hug is perfect too! Share with us your gift ideas on twitter at @passtherouge and on Instagram at passtherouge.

Wishing you all a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Nailed It: All About White Nail Polish

(from left to right) tenoverten Washington, Orly Dayglow, OPI Oh So Glam, Essie East Hampton Cottage

I have recently discovered my love for white nail polish.  I was turned off to this color due to a little mishap that occurred while I was in 5th grade and decided to paint my nails with whiteout–since then I have veered away from white.  Recently we were sent some press samples from tenoverten’s new summer collection and I instantly was drawn to their shade Washington which is beautiful sheer creamy white.   I was a bit apprehensive to try this color but once I saw how great it looked on Valerie’s nails– I decided to try it too- and boy, was I happy I did.

Now that I am all about white/off white shades for spring and now is the best time to explore the white nail polish trend.  What is so great about white polish is that it looks good on everyone– it really does! I have compiled some of my favorite shades of white and wanted to share them with you.  So let’s jump into it:

tenoverten Washington

tenoverten Washington

tenoverten, Washington: Like I said, this color is a beautiful sheer creamy white.  For those who are not a fan of a colorful nails or work in a place that does not encourage a bright nail- this is a great alternative.  Slap two coats on and you’re good to go!

Orly, Dayglow: This shade is a true white- there is no shimmer, or sheen and it is opaque.  Out of all the colors from this list- I think this one happens to be the most versatile and can be worn during the winter months as well.

OPI, Oh So Glam: I do love this color because it’s a “nontraditional” white since it does have some gold flecks in the polish.  The shimmer is very fine and understated but still noticeable in the light.

Essie, East Hampton Cottage: Here is a shade for those who aren’t sure how they feel about the white nail polish trend.  East Hampton Cottage is a super light baby pink that boarders on white.  This has been my go-to color for job interviews, formal occasions, or if I just wanted to sport a basic but classic nail look.  You cannot go wrong with this color.

So there you have it.  I would love to hear what are some of your favorite white nail polishes.   Share with us on twitter  at @passtherouge and on Instagram at passtherouge.

Till Next Time,

Xo Michelle

We Scream for Eye Cream!

I wanted to discuss eye cream with you all today. Now, we have always stressed the importance of eye cream and how it is a must do in anyone skincare routine (I’m even trying to convince my boyfriend to start using it). Now for those of you who don’t know the benefits of eye cream, here are the major bulletpoints:

  • acts as moisturizer that locks in water into the skin
  • helps to stop the progress of fine lines
  • serves as a blockade against environmental factors or conditions
(from left to right) Sibu Age Defying Eye Cream, Pur-lisse pur-eye adore, Dior Hydralife Youth Sorbet Eye Cream, Ole Henriksen Ultimate Eye Lift, Olay Instant Hydration Eye Cream

(from left to right) Sibu Age Defying Eye Cream, Pur-lisse pur-eye adore, Dior Hydralife Youth Sorbet Eye Cream, Ole Henriksen Ultimate Eye Lift, Olay Instant Hydration Eye Cream

Now regardless of what eye cream you use, there are some fundemental rules on how to apply it.  Keep in mind, we are not skincare professionals- these tips work for us and if you perfer your routine- by all mines, stick to it.  So without further ado, here are our eye cream commandments:

Commandment #1: Only use your ring finger when applying your eye cream.  Actually, let’s take this rule one step further– only use your ring fingers when applying products around your eyes. Your ring finger actually has the softest touch and using it to apply the eye area will ensue you are not being too rough.

Commandment #2: ONLY tap, NEVER rub! Like I just said, the skin around your eyes are the most sensitive and are the first places that show signs of age…so you gotta be gentle! I tend to gently press and tab my eye cream into my skin, I’ve even seen some people put it on a cotton pad and leave it on under their eyes for a for about a minute until it’s fully absorbed.

Commandment #3: Do not apply too much product.  Some of you out there are probably rolling your eyes because you already know this- but do you know why? By putting more on will not make the eye cream more effective– I know, seems a bit counterintuitive.  I promise you that if you pack on the product- you will not see any improvements any faster.  As a rule of thumb– apply a pea-sized amount on your ring finger.

So there are my 3 commandments when applying eye cream– hopefully they are some use to you all out there in cyber world.  Don’t forget to follow on twitter  at @passtherouge and on Instagram at passtherouge.

See ya next time!

Lip Balmin’ It!

I am all about easy makeup when the weather starts warming up.  I really don’t want to bother with applying foundation, powder, lipstick and so on– I prefer looking as natural as possible by wearing minimal makeup.  Come Spring,  you will find me either in Central Park or shopping in SoHo wearing just mascara, under eye concealor and some tinted lip balm. Because of my love for tinted lip balm, I have collected quite a large amount of them ranging from high-end brands to drugstore brands.  I wanted to share with you all some of my favorites.. so here we go!

The Body Shop, Born Lippy in Pomegranate Lip Balm– I love The Body Shop, and I purchased this balm on a whim last October.  I love this balm because it glides on smoothly, and doesn’t leave behind a waxy feeling on my lips.  It gives my lips the most beautiful wash of color and the smells like berries. Delish!

(from left to right)The Body Shop, Born Lippy in Pomegranate Lip Balm, Maybelline, Baby Lips in Pink Punch, & Revlon Lip Butter in Sweet Tart

Maybelline, Baby Lips in Pink Punch-  I think the general consensus on this balm is overall pretty positive.  This balm is a great medium between  lipstick and balm in the sense that it is very pigmented compared to your average tinted lip balm.  I happen to love this shade because it leaves my lips with the perfect pink shade for any occasion.  If you’re not comfortable rocking bright pink lipstick this spring and summer- try using Pink Punch.

Revlon Lip Butter in Sweet Tart– This product has a cult following and for good reason.  I have tried a bunch of these lip butters and I love them all, but for the sake of this post I’m going to mention my most used one—Sweet Tart. Honestly, I use this balm all year long because it’s just that great.  I love how it leaves your lips with a subtle, but noticeable, pink tint.  It’s also very buildable so if you’re feeling a bit more daring you can add a few extra swipes to achieve that perfect baby pink color.

So there you have it, my favorite tinted lip balms for spring and summer.  What are your favorite lip products for spring and summer—tell us what you’ve been loving by tweeting us at @passtherouge or show us by following us on Instagram at passtherouge.

Product Rave: MAKE’s Silk Cream Lipstick in Hudson Red

Make Silk Cream Lipstick in Hudson Red

Make Silk Cream Lipstick in Hudson Red

This winter we had the great opportunity to sample some of MAKE Cosmetics products! We were given eye shadows, eyeliners, beautiful palettes, and of course, lip products. Amongst these lip products was their Silk Cream Lipstick in Hudson Red. I have many berry-toned lipsticks but for some reason this one was bold yet subtle enough to wear from day to evening.

The staying power is similar to your average high-end lipstick but the color pay-off is out of this world. I noticed from sampling the other MAKE lipsticks that they all are super pigmented and a little goes a long way.  I also want to point out that this lip product will not over dry or settle into the creases of your lips– in a way it acts like a stain leaving behind a beautiful raspberry color. I have spent countless mornings quickly applying this color and running out the door—it’s that easy. Hudson Red is now one of my favorite colors and I look forward to trying out some of their summer colors!

As usual, we want to hear from you!  Tell us what lipstick you’ve been loving by tweeting us at @passtherouge or show us by following us on Instagram at passtherouge.

Until next time!
